Sprained Ankle

A sprain is an injury to ligaments that is caused by being stretched beyond their normal capacity and possibly torn. A muscular tear caused in the same manner is referred to as a strain. In some cases where either the ligament or muscle tissue is torn, immobilization and surgical repair may be necessary. Remember R-I-C-E Rest-Ice-Compression-Elevate.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Rest the affected joint by stopping any activity that you were doing that caused the injury.
2   Apply an Ice pack or a cold compress to the joint for 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off 4 times during the first day.
3   Apply a Compression bandage to the joint such as an Ace Bandage.
4   Elevate the injury for the first 24 hours.
5   Take some Acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain relief
6   If the pain and/or swelling persist, consult a medical professional as soon as you can.
Warnings
DO NOT place ice directly on the skin make sure it is wrapped in a cloth
DO NOT ice your ankle for more than 20 min as you could cause more damage
If the pain or swelling is severe consult a medical professional
Make sure the compression Ace Bandage is not on too tight
Make sure the person is not allergic to acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Tips
Ice on the sprain will help the blood vessels constrict which leads to less bruising and swelling
Rest a sprain completely for at least 24 hours which is essential for quick healing
Using the sprained joint may lead to further damage
