Shock occurs when the body cannot supply enough oxygen to its tissues. If not recognized early, it can progress and become life threatening.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Activate EMS without delay.
2   Help the body preserve oxygen by maintaining an open airway, ensuring normal breathing, and controlling any external bleeding.
3   If injured, keep the person lying flat on a firm surface.
4   Maintain a normal body temperature. Insulate on top and underneath to prevent heat loss. Be careful not to overheat.
5   Comfort, calm, and reassure the person.
Warnings
Early signs or symptoms can be difficult to detect. Other signs or symptoms can emerge gradually over time.
Shock can reach a point where it becomes irreversible. Early recognition, treatment, and activation of EMS are essential for survival.
Give nothing to eat or drink.
Tips
Shock is a secondary problem, created as a result of a primary illness or injury. Suspect the possibility of shock occurring with anyone who is ill or injured.
