Seizures are caused by excessive electrical activity of the brain. The most common type of seizure involves uncontrolled muscle contractions, called convulsions, throughout the body. Common causes of seizures include brain injury, brain tumor, meningitis, stroke, very low blood sugar, drug use, alcohol withdrawal, very high fever, and illness during pregnancy. A person may have an ongoing condition known as epilepsy in which seizures occur randomly over time.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Protect the person from injury during the seizure.
2   Following the seizure, if the person is unresponsive and not breathing or not breathing normally, begin CPR.
3   If breathing normally, place person in recovery position. Calm, comfort, and reassure the person.
4   A seizure may be a symptom of a serious underlying condition. Activate EMS without delay if you are in doubt.
Warnings
Do not tightly restrain the person
Do not try to open the mouth or put anything between the person’s teeth.
Tips
Most seizures happen without warning, last only a short time, and stop without any special treatment.
It is normal for responsiveness to improve slowly after a seizure. Provide continual reassurance as the person improves.
A person with a history of seizures may refuse additional care after recovery.
