Sea Sponge Irritation
Bookmark and Share

Sea sponges are a docile creature that usually live on the ocean floor anchored to other objects such as on shells and stones. They are often harvested for commercial purposes; what you normally see in the store is actually the skeleton of the sponge. A rash can occur if contact is made with the excrement of a sea sponge. Usually this rash tends to occur around the wrist area but can happen anywhere on your body.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Apply soaks of vinegar or isopropyl alcohol to the irritated area until the pain is relieved.
2   Use adhesive tape to the area of irritation and peel it off to remove sponge particles that may be on the skin.
3   Apply additional soaks of vinegar or isopropyl alcohol.
4   Apply Hydrocortisone cream 2-3 times daily to relieve itching and consider an antihistamine like Benadryl as described.
5   Seek medical attention if symptoms persist more than 2 days or become more severe.
Warnings
If any evidence of infection shows such as redness, pus, pain, a foul odor, heat, or fever consult a medical professional to get antibiotics
Tips
Make sure to thoroughly wash your swim suit as well
