Bookmark and Share

An injury can easily occur to a nail. First aid treatment is crucial to avoid infection.

Symptoms

Steps
1   If possible remove all jewelry from the affected hand or foot.
2   Control any bleeding by applying pressure with a clean cloth. When the bleeding has stopped, remove the cloth and examine the injury.
3   Keep hand or foot elevated.
4   Take acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Advil) for pain, if you are not allergic.
5   Wash any cuts or scrapes in soap and water, then apply a triple antibiotic ointment and bandage.
6   If there are any lacerations, avulsions, a large nail bruise, or if the finger or toe is bent consult your doctor.
Warnings
DO NOT pull at the nail or try to remove it from the nail bed
Make sure the person is not allergic to acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Tips
Make sure that your tetanus immunization is current as there is a risk if the wound was inflicted with a "dirty" object.
