Mosquito Bite
Bookmark and Share

Mosquitoes are a real nuisance. They not only bite, causing an itching bump, but also have the potential to spread dangerous diseases like Malaria, and West Nile Virus. If hiking, be sure to slap on insect repellent to reduce the likelihood of being bitten. At home, overturn unused flowerpots and remove possible areas of stagnant water to reduce the breeding of mosquitoes. Using candles or potpourri that are infused with citronella oil while outside or planting a citronella shrub is also a good option.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Wash the bite area with mild soap and water as this will provide temporary relief from the itch and will also wash away any bacteria on the skin.
2   Reduce the itching by applying a paste of baking soda and water to the bite area.
3   You can also rub a bar of soap directly on the bite area.
4   Applying a cool compress, an ice pack wrapped in a towel or a washcloth soaked in cold water also helps reduce itching.
5   More conventional anti-itching medications such as calamine lotion and cortisone creams can relieve itching for a significant period of time.
6   If you experience allergic reactions to mosquito bites, anti-inflammatory medication containing ibuprofen can reduce redness, pain, itching, swelling and fever.
Warnings
DO NOT scratch or rub the bitten area as it can cause damage to the skin and sometimes bleeding.
Make sure the person is not allergic to ibuprofen
Tips
A homemade remedy such as applying vinegar or a paste made of baking soda and water to the bite is effective.
If the itch is unbearable, topical anesthetics containing pramoxine take away pain and itching, they include PrameGel and Caladryl
