Mercury Poisoning

Mercury poisoning is due to exposure to the toxic element of mercury. Mercury is destructive to the immune system and causes many unrelated diseases.

Symptoms

Steps
1   If the mercury is GREATER than what is in a small thermometer, then DO NOT touch it or clean it up.
2   Call your local environmental health department or poison control. See medical attention if any contact is made with the mercury.
3   Open the window to ventilate the area.
4   Leave the area until a health professional assesses and cleans the mercury spill
5   If the mercury is small (amount in a thermometer) you may clean it by using an index card to scoop the mercury while avoiding all skin contact by wearing thick gloves
6   Dispose of the mercury in a glass jar and seal the lid or in a zip-loc bag.
7   Call your local environmental health department to dispose of the mercury.
8   Ventilate the area of the spill for at least 2 days.
Warnings
Mercury is highly poisonous AVOID all skin contact
Remove any gold jewelry as mercury adheres to gold
Tips
Use gloves when handling the index card to remove Mercury
Be sure to ventilate the area
