Ingrown Toenail

Ingrown nail is a common nail problem. Although affecting both fingers and toes, they happen more frequently in toes. It is a painful condition where a sharp corner of the nail cuts and digs into one or both sides of the nailbed. They may be a result of improper footwear, poor nail maintenance or simply increased pressure on the nail bed. Infections can arise if not treated promptly.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Soak the foot in warm water 4 times a day with salt water.
2   Wash the foot including the affected area twice a day with soap and water and keep the foot clean and dry during the rest of the day.
3   Wear sandals or flip flops, if appropriate, until the condition clears up.
4   Take a small piece of cotton or gauze and roll it between your fingers to form a small roll or wick.
5   Lift up the corner of the nail that is digging into the skin and place the roll between the nail and the skin to keep it elevated. It is painful but is the most important part of home treatment. After every soaking, try to push the roll a little farther in.
6   You may take a pain reliever such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
7   If you see no improvement within 3 days, or notice discharge from the nail, see your doctor or podiatrist.
Warnings
You do not need to add soap or antibacterial agents to the water
DO NOT wear high heels or tight-fitting shoes
Make sure the person is not allergic to acetaminophen or ibuprofen
Tips
It may take from seven to 15 days for the nail to grow out so that it does not poke into the skin any longer.
Cut toenails straight across. Avoid cutting too short or round the tips.
