Bookmark and Share

Cramp is a term often used to refer to a painful, involuntary contraction of a single muscle or a muscle group. Cramps are caused by overexertion of the muscles, poor circulation, nutritional element deficiency (e.g. potassium, vitamin D) inappropriate leg positions while sitting or dehydration. Make sure to drink plenty of water and stretch every day to prevent cramping.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Straighten the person’s bent toes and push the foot upwards and away from the cramping position and hold it there until the foot cramp disappears
2   Elevate your foot to the level of your waist
3   Gently massage the foot for 5-10 min until the cramp subsides.
4   Provide plenty of water as cramps may occur due to dehydration.
5   Take a dose of aspirin or ibuprofen as it may help ease any pain.
6   Alternating ice and heat applications to the foot cramp may help as well.
7   Use moist heat on the foot cramp three times a day if cramping is chronic
8   Try a warm foot soak
9   Stay off your foot and give the foot cramp a chance to heal.
Warnings
DO NOT apply ice directly to your foot and instead wrap it in a cloth
See a doctor about chronic and persistent foot cramps
Make sure the person is not allergic to aspirin or ibuprofen
If the cramp does not subside within a 30min, or is persistent seek medical attention.
