Flu (Influenza)

Influenza is a highly contagious disease. The flu virus is spread when you inhale infected droplets in the air. They are also linked to seasonal epidemics but can affect you anytime of the year. Very young children and the elderly are particularly susceptible to the effects of having the flu.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Rest in bed and avoid any physical exertion
2   Drink lots of fluids such as water, juices, sports drinks, and clear soups like chicken soup
3   Treat a fever, muscle aches, and headache with 2 acetaminophen tablets every 4-6 hours as needed
4   To ease coughing get cough syrup, along with lozenges and plenty of fluids.
5   For a sore throat use saltwater gargles (1 tsp of salt in 8 oz warm water) and throat lozenges to soothe the throat.
6   For nasal congestion take an over the counter decongestant or try to inhale moisture from a steamy room or using a humidifier
7   If symptoms become worse or last more than a week, seek medical attention.
Warnings
DO NOT drink any alcohol or use any tobacco
DO NOT give aspirin to children under 16
Make sure the person is not allergic to aspirin or acetaminophen
Tips
Antibiotics are of no value in treating colds, coughs, and sore throats caused by viruses
Flu vaccinations are highly advised especially if you have a chronic illness, are over 60, or are in the childcare/healthcare industry.
