Bookmark and Share

Diabetes is a chronic disease in which the body cannot effectively use sugar for energy. Diabetic emergencies can occur when the amount of sugar in the blood becomes either very high or very low. Regardless of the underlying cause, the immediate treatment for both emergencies is the same.

Symptoms

Steps
1   If the person is confirmed to be a diabetic and unable to swallow, activate EMS without delay.
2   If the person is confirmed to be a diabetic and can swallow without difficulty, give sweet juice, candy, or any sweet substance containing sugar.
3   If the person has a commercially made glucose product, use it instead.
4   Calm, comfort, and reassure the person.
5   If there is no response to sugar within about 15 minutes or the condition worsens, activate EMS.
Warnings
The most immediate danger to someone with an altered mental status is inability to protect and clear the airway. Nothing should be given by mouth to anyone with an altered mental status.
It is important to note that insulin is not considered an emergency medication. It is never appropriate to administer insulin to a diabetic person in an emergency setting.
Diabetes can cause an altered mental status similar to intoxication. Avoid making a quick assumption about the person’s condition.
Tips
Persons with a history of diabetes may refuse additional care after recovery.
