Critical Burns

Burns are typically described by the mechanism that produced them and the amount of skin surface that is affected. Causes of burns include: Thermal heat sources such as hot water and fire; Chemicals, wet and dry; Electrical energy. Critical burns include: Large, partial-thickness burns that extend into the lower layers of the skin and result in blistering; Full-thickness burns that damage all layers of the skin and extend into fat and muscle tissue; Burns on the face, hands, feet, or genitals; Burns involving the airway or result in breathing difficulty; Burns involving someone under 5 years old or older than 60.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Expose affected area by gently cutting or tearing away clothing. If clothing is stuck to the burn, do not remove it.
2   Cool the affected area with cold tap water as quickly as possible. Continue cooling until pain is relieved.
3   If able, remove any jewelry near the affected area.
4   Separate finger or toes with dry, sterile, non-adhesive dressings.
5   Lightly cover the burn area with a dry, clean pad or clean sheet.
6   Monitor airway for swelling from inhalation of smoke or hot gases.
7   Give the person nothing to eat or drink.
Warnings
If someone is on fire, tell him to STOP, DROP, and ROLL. Try to smother flames with a coat, rug, or blanket, or douse them with water.
Do not apply ointment, butter, ice, medications, cream, oil, spray, or any other substance to a moderate or major burn.
Tips
Always activate EMS for a critical burn or if you are in doubt about its severity.
