Cold Sores

Cold sores are caused by a highly contagious virus called herpes simplex type 1. Cold sores typically occur outside the mouth on the lips, chin, and cheeks, or in the nostrils. There is no cure for cold sores but can be effectively managed.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Use petroleum jelly or lip balm to keep the cold sore moist to prevent cracking and bleeding
2   Wash your hands thoroughly after every application and do not reuse applicators.
3   You can use acetaminophen or ibuprofen to relieve pain
4   To reduce pain and itching apply a disposable ice pack for 5-10 min each hour on the sore to slow down development of the cold sores.
5   Use an over the counter cold sore cream like acyclovir cream for management of the cold sore.
6   Consult a doctor if the cold sore does not resolve within 5 days of using the cold sore cream.
Warnings
DO NOT touch eyes and genitals after touching a cold sore as it's easy to spread the virus to these areas
Cold Sores are very contagious so do not kiss anyone or share foods or drinks as long as the cold sore is visible
Make sure the person is not allergic to acetaminophen or ibuprofen
