Bruises - Contusion

Following an injury and caused by bleeding into tissues under the skin or bleeding into the skin. The skin will be red and will develop blue-black quite rapidly. Seniors and others who are taking blood-thinning drugs are more likely to bruise easily.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Support the injured part in the most comfortable position.
2   Place a cold compress to reduce the blood flow to the injury and relieve pain.
3   Press firmly on the compress and keep it in its place for at least 15 minutes per hour for the first 24-48 hours.
4   Keep the bruised area elevated if possible.
5   Rest the muscles in the area of the bruise to allow it to heal faster.
6   Use Tylenol or acetaminophen to help reduce pain from the bruise.
7   If the bruise persists for more than 2 weeks seek medical attention.
Warnings
DO NOT place ice directly on the skin, wrap it in a cloth.
Streaks of redness, pus, or fever may indicate an infection, seek medical help immediately.
Make sure the person is not allergic to acetaminophen.
Tips
Usually bruises disappear within 1-2 weeks.
Bruise becomes a yellow-brown as it heals.
