Box Jellyfish Sting
Bookmark and Share

Box Jellyfish are extremely venomous and can kill humans. They are usually found in tropical waters. The stingers and tentacles on this animal are extremely powerful. Along with causing excruciating pain for weeks, the animal's venom is capable of stopping the heart or paralyzing the lungs. The venom will also slowly eat away at the skin.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Call for emergency assistance, as time is very important.
2   Pour large amounts of vinegar on the sting area and soak for at least 30 seconds. This will help inactivate the remaining stinging cells.
3   Remove any remaining tentacles with a gloved hand or a hand wrapped in a towel. You may also use tweezers to remove the stinging cells.
4   For severe pain, try applying a hot pack. If heat makes the sting feel worse, try applying a cold pack or ice to the sting.
5   Anaphylactic shock can occur so make sure you get medical help especially for severe reactions.
Warnings
DO NOT use fresh water or tap water because fresh water can stimulate the stinging cells to release venom
DO NOT use your bare hand to remove tentacles as they can still sting you.
DO NOT scrub the affected area
Tips
Urine does not work on a jellyfish sting, it does not have enough acid to neutralize the venom so use vinegar
