Bee Sting
Bookmark and Share

Bee’s main line of defense is their stinger. When threatened or agitated they are likely to sting. The sting will be a sharp pain. Upon the bee stinging it detaches the stinger in the skin and dies.

Symptoms

Steps
1   If the person was stung by a honeybee, wasp, hornet, or yellow jacket, and the stinger is visible, remove it by gently scraping the skin horizontally with the edge of a credit card or your fingernails.
2   Wash the area with soap and water.
3   Apply ice pack, ice, or a cool wet cloth to the area to relieve pain or swelling. This will also decrease the absorption and spread of venom.
4   If the area is itchy, apply a paste of baking soda and water, or calamine lotion
5   Take an oral antihistamine to help ease the symptoms.
Warnings
DO NOT apply calamine lotion to the victim's face or genitals
Call 911 if the person is allergic to a bee sting as it can be life threatening.
DO NOT place ice directly on the skin, make sure you wrap it up in a soft cloth or towel.
Tips
Remove the person from the area where he or she was stung so as not to risk getting stung again.
Be aware of any allergic reactions caused from the sting and report it to a medical professional.
