Back Pain (Lower)
Bookmark and Share

Straining your lower back is easily done if you pick up something in the wrong "way." If the pain persists seek medical advice as there could be a larger problem like a slipped disc or nerve root compression.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Stop the activity which may have provoked the pain. Rest in a comfortable position.
2   Take pressure off the back by lying down
3   Place an ice pack on the area 20 minutes on and 40 minutes off for the first 24-48 hours.
4   For stiffness or fatigue place a heating pad on the back
5   Take some analgesic (Acetaminophen, Aspirin/Ibuprofen) for pain relief.
6   If bladder and/or bowel control is affected seek medical advice immediately.
Warnings
DO NOT put ice directly on the skin, wrap it in cloth or gauze first
Seek medical help immediately if pain is caused by a blow to your back or other trauma
Tips
Rest your back by placing one foot on a foot rest when standing
Maintain good posture when sitting and good lifting techniques.
Depending on the type of injury sleeping with a pillow between the knees while lying on one side may increase comfort.
