Altitude Sickness
Bookmark and Share

Altitude sickness is caused by the lack of oxygen in the air. This usually happens at high altitudes usually higher than 8,000 ft where there is decreased pressure.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Help the person stay calm so they can try and catch their breath.
2   If there is auxiliary oxygen available provide it to the person.
3   Stop ascent and camp until symptoms fully subside (may take a few days). Encourage the person to breathe deeply every few minutes to decrease the carbon dioxide in his or her blood.
4   If there are severe symptoms return to a lower altitude of 1,800 ft (600m) or less right away to see if the symptoms get better. Continue going down until your symptoms go away completely
5   Even after the person feels better they should seek medical treatment to receive medication like Diamox or more oxygen.
Warnings
DO NOT leave the person alone, accompany them to a lower altitude.
DO NOT ignore signs of altitude sickness as people can die of this.
Tips
Keep the person as calm as possible to calm their breathing and heart rate.
Drink plenty of non-caffeinated fluids to avoid dehydration
Once over 10,000ft, aim for an ascend of about 1000ft (500m) a day to avoid altitude sickness.
