Bookmark and Share

Scorpions are usually found in arid desert like terrain. Most scorpion stings are painful however are usually no worse than a beesting. The exception is the Bark Scorpion which in rare cases can cause paralysis and lead to death. Remember that not all scorpion stings are visible and others can cause swelling in 20 minutes from the initial sting. Simple first aid can help your pet giving you enough time to get your pet to the vet for further treatment.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Place a cold wet washcloth on the site of the sting and place an ice pack over it for 10 min on and 10 min off
2   Try to keep your pet quiet and calm. Limit your pet’s activity as this hastens the circulation of the poison. You can place small animals in a pet carrier or box to restrict movement.
3   Put an Elizabethan collar around your dog or prevent him from chewing at the sting site
4   Mix 1 tablespoon of baking soda and enough water to create a thick paste and place it on any swelling
5   If your dog is still able to eat and swallow, administer diphenhydramine (Benadryl) allergy tablets by mouth (1mg per pound of body weight) to prevent a serious allergic reaction.
6   Call your veterinarian for further instructions
Warnings
DO NOT allow your dog to chew at the sting site as that can make the reaction worse
Make sure to call your vet immediately
DO NOT apply a tourniquet.
Tips
The baking soda paste will work well on areas that don't have much fur like the tummy
