Rectal Prolapse

Rectal prolapse is seen when layers of the rectum have invaginated through the anus. It can occur at any age but is commonly seen in young pups with intestinal parasites or animals with chronic diarrhea. Other common causes of rectal prolapse are foreign bodies, tumors, and disorders of the urinary or genital systems.

Symptoms

Straining to Pass Feces	Rectal Swelling
Pain	Diarrhea
Rectal Irritation

Steps

Use sterile saline contact lens solution and squirt over the swollen rectal area

Put on a pair of disposable gloves and apply lots of KY Jelly to the exposed rectal tissue

Take a small towel and moisten it with saline solution and wrap the area with it

Take your dog to the vet's office immediately

Warnings

DO NOT use plain water to rinse the rectal tissue as it will be absorbed into the tissue and make the swelling worse

DO NOT allow your dog to lick or chew on the tissue as he will want to due to the numb feeling and that will cause further serious damage

Tips

If you need to make saline solution you can dissolve 1 1/2 teaspoons of table salt in a pint of lukewarm water and place the solution in a squirt bottle.
