Bookmark and Share

Jellyfish have multiple tentacles with stinging cells that are very painful on contact. The stinging cells have inject toxins to paralyze any prey. The stings are not dangerous but do need to be treated with first aid.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Make sure to put on a pair of rubber gloves before assisting your dog to prevent getting stung by any tentacles
2   Pour rubbing alcohol (70% or greater) on the tentacles to prevent them from stinging further
3   If the tentacles are stuck to the fur and not the skin pour sand over them and use a towel or pour seawater to remove them
4   If your dog develops a severe allergic reaction from being stung (e.g. facial swelling, hives, intense scratching) administer diphenhydramine (Benadryl) allergy tablets by mouth (1mg per pound of body weight.) Only administer Benadryl by mouth if your dog is still able to eat and swallow.
5   Make a paste from baking soda and water and apply it to site of the sting to soothe any pain
6   If he has been stung multiple times add baking soda to cool water and bathe him in the solution for 10 min
7   Wrap an ice pack with a cold wet washcloth and apply it to the sting for 10-30 min
8   Alternate it with a towel covered hot compress 5 min on and 5 min off until it cools
9   Applying a fresh slice of papaya is a great remedy on the sting site as well especially if your dog has been stung in the mouth
