Head Entrapment (Jar)
Bookmark and Share

Dogs can get their heads stuck easily because the back of their head is wider than the front. Head entrapment is usually not a medical emergency unless your pet has trouble breathing. However your dog can become frantic and hysterical from being stuck and injure themselves further.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Grease the fur on his neck and the neck of the jar with KY Jelly or Petroleum Jelly
2   Wrap the glass jar with a towel and gently pull
3   Try this 1-2 times
4   If it does not come off then go to the animal hospital to have them sedate your dog and remove the jar
5   If you desperately need to take your dog's head out of the jar then place some padding, tissues, or small towel inside the jar to cover the dog's eyes and face
6   Wear some heavy duty gloves
7   Have someone hold the dog very still
8   Slip a metal spoon with the underside facing up into the jar between the padding and glass
9   Gently break the glass at the large end of the jar with a blunt object sharply on top of where the spoon is resting with up to 3 sharp cracks
10   Make sure to rinse the dog to make sure there is no glass on your dog
Warnings
Make sure to place padding between the dog's neck and the jar so he does not get cut
If you can not get the jar off in 1-2 trys make sure to go to the animal hospital
Try not to use a hammer as that can shatter the glass
Tips
Try to extend your dog's head so that it is straight like in a sniffing position
Try to utilize 2 people to remove the jar, 1 to hold the dog and the other to pull the jar
Hitting the glass between the 2 pieces of metal should shatter the glass away from the dog's neck
