Bookmark and Share

Once in a while a foreign object can get stuck inside the ear. Common objects include grass seeds, awns, stickers, environmental debris, and ticks. Your pet will be quite uncomfortable trying hard to get it out. It is something that can possibly develop into an infection so it's important to treat it as quick as possible.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Muzzle your dog to prevent him biting you
2   Have a second person hold your dog while you examine his ear and carefully grasp the earflap with one hand and shine a flashlight into his ear
3   If you see any foreign object at the opening of the ear canal you can try to remove it with blunt-tipped tweezers
4   After removing the object rinse out the ear with warm contact lens solution by streaming the liquid in the ear canal filling it up
5   Massage the base of the ear canal then wipe out the fluid with a cotton ball or soft cloth
6   Seek veterinary attention if you do not see a foreign body or were unsuccessful at removing the object.
Warnings
DO NOT attempt to remove the object if it is deep in the ear canal, let a vet get it out
If you can't get the item out keep your dog quiet and as still as possible as shaking his head can injure the ear flap
Tips
The ear canal of the dog is "L" shaped so don't be alarmed if you can't see anything in the opening of the ear canal as the item can be further in the ear canal
