Eye infections in dogs can be caused by bacteria, viruses, allergies, trauma to the eye, foreign bodies, tumors, and underlying medical problems. Eye injuries and infections should be treated by a vet promptly to ensure preservation of sight.

Symptoms

Steps
1   You will need to wash off any eye discharge by moistening a cotton ball or cotton wool with sterile saline or clean water to loosen any crust
2   After softening the cotton you can wipe it off easily
3   Flush out the eyes with sterile saline contact lens solution by holding his eye open with your thumb and forefinger and gently squirt the solution to flush the eye
4   Call your vet the same day and get any additional advice
Warnings
Never hold the dog around his neck as that can cause him to choke
Be sure to handle your pet gently as severely injured eyes can be very delicate and even rupture.
Tips
You may have to wash off any eye discharge several times to clean away all of it
Flushing the eye with saline solution will wash away debris and ease any pain
Eye infections will take 2 or more weeks to heal and washing the eye daily with saline solution will reduce pain and help the infection heal more quickly
