Sometimes dogs may eat inappropriate objects such as balls, toys, sticks and/or get bits of bone stuck in their throat. DO NOT attempt the Heimlich Maneuver unless you are absolutely positive that your pet ingested a foreign object and can see the object sitting in the back of the throat. Otherwise, the Heimlich Maneuver can be very dangerous if performed on an animal with a breathing problem that has not swallowed a foreign body. The Heimlich has the potential to cause serious damage to internal organs if performed incorrectly.

Symptoms

Steps
1   If conscious check & sweep the mouth. Pull tongue out. Can you see object? If object is visible, use fingers, kitchen tongs or a cloth to grasp the foreign object or swipe it out.
2   If unsuccessful, repeat the above holding small dogs upside down and lift larger dogs by hind limbs and try to dislodge the object. Sweep the mouth again.
3   If unsuccessful, attempt the Heimlich Maneuver. Stand or kneel behind your pet and hold him back against your body with his head up and feet hanging down.
4   Fit your fist into the soft hollow area beneath his rib cage and pull in and up toward your belly and chin with a strong thrusting action for 4-5 time. Check and sweep mouth.
5   Seek veterinary attention even if you get the object out to have your pet checked out in case there is damage to your pet’s throat.
Warnings
If your dog can’t breathe past the object then he will pass out and die in minutes
Take care not to get bitten when checking & sweeping the mouth
Avoid pushing the foreign body further down the throat

Tips
If you hear wheezing or some noise when breathing then he is still getting air past the object
Carry your pet to the vet in a pet carrier or in your arms
Turn on the A/C in the car to cool down the dog as they may be overheated from having something stuck in their throats
