Bowel Obstruction
Bookmark and Share

Bowel obstructions can occur since pets are playful creatures and just like children they like to put everything in their mouth. Usually if the item is small enough it will just pass through but on the rare occasion a large item or even string is ingested it is essential to provide first aid as those items can cause serious damage to your pet. Make sure to monitor your pet for unusual behaviors to indicate they may have ingested something they shouldn't have. It can also occur from fecal impaction, intestinal worms, and cancerous masses.

Symptoms

Steps
1   If your dog has eaten a small object and is not vomiting feed a large meal about 1 1/2 times the normal serving to increase bowel activity and allow the object to pass
2   You can also add 1 teaspoon of mineral oil for every 10 pounds of your dog's weight to his food and mix it in well
3   If you see string coming out of the anus do not pull it out as there could be a hook at the other end or pulling it could cut your pet's intestinal tract, instead just clip the string from where you can see it and so your dog won't pull it
4   Take your dog to the vet as soon as possible if the dog begins to vomit or otherwise act unwell or if an item is stuck and protruding from its anus
Warnings
Only wait for the object to pass as long as you know that the object that he swallowed is small and your dog is acting normally
DO NOT give mineral oil directly into the mouth as your dog can inhale it, make sure it's mixed in his food
DO NOT pull any string coming out of the anus as it could cut the intestinal tract
Tips
Make sure to monitor your pet and make sure he is eating and drinking normally
The mineral oil will slick the mass and allow it to pass.
