Abdominal Non-Penetrating Wound
Bookmark and Share

Abdominal injuries can occur from car accidents, falls, or even an accidental kick to the stomach from a human or horse. A dog in pain might bite, hunch its back and/or refuse to move. Even if you cannot see outward signs of injury, there may be damage to internal organs and therefore it is important that you seek veterinary attention. If your dog does not have a severe injury and is not in serious pain you can try treating him at home otherwise you will have to take him to the vet.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Check for bleeding, and if bleeding control bleeding with gauze pads and apply pressure.
2   Once bleeding has stopped gently clean wound with 3 parts warm water and 1 part povidone iodine
3   If there is no bleeding and if you can safely handle your dog without being bitten attempt the following procedures.
4   Shave or cut any fur away from the injury with electric clippers keeping a 1 inch border around the wound.
5   Use lots of warm water and a clean washcloth to wipe any wounds
6   If there is any crusting or cheezy looking white, yellow, green or black material clean it off with a stream of lukewarm water from a sprayer
7   Put on disposable gloves and rinse the area until the debris softens and then ease the discharge away and repeat as needed for the first 2-3 days
8   If the wound is large, completely penetrates the skin, or is not healing well or your dog is in pain, or acting sick in any way consult your vet
Warnings
DO NOT wash the wound if it looks like a healthy scab is forming
Tips
To prevent the clippings from sticking to the wound coat it with a thin layer of KY Jelly and then you can wash it off after cutting.
Muzzle your injured dog while handling him to prevent bites to nearby people. A strip of cloth can be made into a makeshift muzzle by tying a loose loop in the middle, sliding it over the dog’s nose, tightening the loop and then tying the free ends of the material behind the dog’s ears. Remove the muzzle as soon as possible so as not to restrict his breathing.
