Paw Damage
Bookmark and Share

Pets can get injured on their pads easily as there is minimal protection from sharp items. The damage can also occur from constant licking of the pads which will wear them down and develop a sore. If the cut on the paw is not treated immediately it can develop an infection. Apply simple first aid but if the bleeding or cut is severe consult a vet as soon as possible.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Keep her as still as possible and have someone help you restrain her as you administer first aid
2   Apply pressure on the wound with a clean cloth, it should stop bleeding within 5 min
3   If bleeding persists longer than 5 min then place another bandage over the first and then place a sock over the leg and tape it at the top to hold in place and take your cat to the vet
4   If it isn't bleeding heavily then clean it by rinsing it with cool water and Betadine Skin cleanser or any antiseptic liquid and then dry thoroughly
5   Place some antibiotic ointment over the shallow cut and use a sock to cover the wound and make sure to change the sock daily for the first 2-3 days and then at least every 2 days until it heals.
6   If the paw damage becomes red, swells, or starts to smell there could be an infection so consult your vet
Warnings
If your cat won't let you check her and fights too much then take her to the vet immediately
DO NOT remove the first pad if it soaks through apply another clean cloth over it
Tips
If the sock becomes wet or dirty you will need to replace it
To keep the sock clean cover it with a plastic bag if your cat goes outside and then remove it when she comes back in
