Jaw Swelling

Jaw swelling can be due to any number of things such as breaks in the bone especially after a fall, abscesses from fights, bites from insects or snakes, masses in the mouth, and tooth root abscesses. It is therefore important that you see a veterinarian to diagnose the cause and direct appropriate treatment.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Apply a cold wet washcloth on the swollen area
2   Apply an ice pack over the washcloth to relieve any pain and swelling for 10-30 min a few times a day until swelling goes away
3   If swelling feels hot or is infected seek a veterinarian immediately
4   Feed a soft diet like canned commercial food or meat baby food until problem is treated
5   If there is any jaw swelling acne infection clean the area once a day with warm water or 3% hydrogen peroxide
Warnings
Cat's with swollen jaws have trouble eating regular food
Make sure you have your cat checked out by a vet the same day as jaw swelling is noticed
Tips
Check for punctures or wounds around the jaw and treat accordingly
Bee stings can cause the jaw to swell so treat accordingly
