Hair mats usually occur due to not grooming your pet properly. It is a collection of tangled fur. This fur tends to pull against the skin while your pet moves around and can be painful. If the mats are in the groin or armpit area they can be extremely painful. Hair mats are easy to remove and can be done with simple first aid.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Restrain your cat by having a second person grasp the cat by the scruff with one hand and by the hind feet with the other and gently hold her down on a table
2   Put some powdered cornstarch into the wad of dry fur to help separate the hairs
3   Use a wide toothed comb or brush to ease the tangle
4   After removing the mat you can relieve any skin irritation by applying ice wrapped in a wet washcloth for 10-15 min twice a day for 2 days if the mat cannot be untangled comfortably, use electric clipper to reach underneath and shave it away from the skin. Do not use scissors as the mat may be very closely attached to the underlying skin, and you can easily cut your pet.
