Foreign Object In Ear
Bookmark and Share

Once in a while a foreign object can get stuck inside the ear. These items can include something small as a seed or even something larger. Your pet will be quite uncomfortable trying hard to get it out. It is something that can possibly develop into an infection so it's important to treat it as quick as possible.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Muzzle your cat to prevent her biting you
2   Have a second person hold your cat while you examine her ear and carefully grasp the ear flap with one hand and shine a flashlight into her ear
3   If you see any foreign object at the opening of the ear canal you can try to remove it with blunt-tipped tweezers
4   If you were successful at removing the object, gently swab out the ear with a cotton ball moistened with a saline solution such as saline-only contact lens solution.
5   Massage the base of the ear canal then wipe out the fluid with a cotton ball or soft cloth
6   Apply a little Neosporin in the ear canal and massage the base of the ear to spread the medicine evenly to fight infection and soothe any irritation
Warnings
DO NOT attempt to remove the object if it is deep in the ear canal, let a vet get it out
If you can't get the item out keep your cat quiet and as still as possible as shaking her head can injure the ear flap
Tips
The ear canal of the cat is "L" shaped so don't be alarmed if you can't see anything in the opening of the ear canal as the item can be further in the ear canal
You can also give your pet Benadryl to reduce irritation and swelling until the item is removed by giving an average-sized cat (e.g., 10 pounds) 2 mg of Benadryl® every 12 hours
