Broken Nail

Broken nails are uncommon on most pets if their nails are trimmed or worn short. If your pet plays around enough and is groomed regularly it is unlikely to experience a broken nail. In rare instances your pet can get snagged on bedding or curtains causing the nail to break. Dew claws and overgrown nails are commonly affected. It is a painful and usually bloody problem to deal with since there are so many blood vessels that run in the toes.

Symptoms

Steps
1   Restrain and muzzle your cat if needed to prevent them from biting you while you try to help them.
2   If the nail is barely hanging on, your cat will probably remove it herself by chewing or licking at it.
3   More firmly attached nail needs to be pulled free. This procedure is very painful unless the cat is sedated so take her to the veterinarian for proper care.
4   If the wound is bleeding, place a sock over your cat's foot and gently wrap it with bandage material or tape until you can get to the veterinarian.
Warnings
If the bleeding does not stop in 30 min go to a vet immediately
Tips
If the nail is just bleeding following a toe nail trim, apply styptic powder with a cotton bud to the tip of the nail. If styptic powder is unavailable, a good alternative is corn starch or flower.
The bleeding should resolve in 5 minutes or less.
